GREECE: Hronia Polla - Sakis Rouvas
For many around the world, Christmas Day is the day of giving and receiving gifts, however, not so in the Hellenic Republic – Greece, to us simple folk. In fact, exchanging presents takes place on New Years’ Day, and their celebrations of the festive season continues until January 6th. As such, in this particular Christmas song, New Year’s takes precedence over the 25th December. Former Eurovision contestant Sakis Rouvas sings about love and loss over the holiday period. Its jaunty and upbeat tone, seems to be inspired by Christmas hits of the past such as All I Want For Christmas Is You and Last Christmas. One can imagine being at an office party drunk on ouzo belting out the chorus of this Christmas pop hit. It might not be a tune that has reinvented the wheel but it fits the bill for what it is trying to do.
